Muhannad Al Aiti studied his Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering/Textile Engineering at Damascus University (Damascus, Syria) from 2000 to 2005 (regular study time 10 semesters). From 2006 to 2008, he studied Master’s in Business Administration at the higher Institute for Administrative Development at Damascus University. He received a joint-scholarship (04/2009-11/2011) from the German Academic Exchange Service and Damascus University for his master study in Textile Engineering at Technische Universität Dresden / Institute of Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology. In his master thesis, he investigated the development and structural properties of highly porous artificial scaffolds.
He worked as a research associate at the Institute of Textile Machinery and Textile High Performance of TU Dresden from 2012 till 2013. From 2014 to 2020, he worked as a visiting scientist at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden (IPF Dresden) / Chair of Polymeric Materials as well as a research associate at the Institute of Lightweight and Polymer Technology of TU Dresden. At the Leibniz Institute he primarily worked on the development of lignin-based carbon fibers in lab-scale by tuning the fine structure of the polymeric precursor fibers. In 2020, he defended his PhD thesis titled “On the morphology and structure formation of lignin-based carbon fibers” with the predicate “summa cum laude” under the supervision of Prof. Gert Heinrich. His thesis was awarded with the WAK-Röchling-Award for outstanding research work on new hybrid materials, systems and process technologies based on plastics.
In 2021, he shifted to the industry as a project leader, where he was responsible for the conceptualization and procurement of a lab-scale carbonization line for carbon fibers based on renewable polymeric materials.
In 2022, he joined our chair where he plans to pursue the further development of renewable material systems for various environmental applications (e.g. energy-harvesting, interactive material systems, and functional carbons).
