Description

(1) Pyroelectric materials in liquid environment: application of pyroelectric surfaces for the delay of ice nucleation.

The development and use of novel surface coating with pyroelectric materials to prevent ice adhesion on component surfaces holds a great potential for innovation in many applications for the Free State of Saxony’s relevant economic sectors (e.g. in wind turbines, photovoltaic and solar installations, passenger and goods transport systems, and energy supply systems). The electrochemical mechanisms at the solid/liquid interface under the influence of the pyroelectric effect are still not fully understood. Many separate scientific studies at the Institute for Materials Science of the TU Dresden are required to elucidate the highly complex interfacial processes.

(2) Development of reactive biohybrid systems for sensory detection of environmentally relevant valuable substances and pollutants in aqueous systems.

The research project is aimed at the sustainable use of water and resources. With the help of bacterial cell components (S-layer proteins), biohybrid systems for the detection (sensor) and accumulation (actor) of valuable substances and pollutants in aqueous systems will be developed. Such processes can be used for waste water treatment, or the recovery of strategically important metals (such as yttrium, gallium, or rare earths) from mining and industrial process waters. By functionalizing surfaces with special bacterial S-layer proteins, sensor systems can be developed, which are characterized by high sensitivity and selectivity for metal ions.
