With the employment of Prof. Achim J. Lilienthal, MIRMI included an additional sensing modality in its portfolio: the sense of smell. Mobile Robot Olfaction (the research of combining intelligent mobile robots with an artificial sense of smell) is important because chemical sensing provides a valuable source of information about the environment, allowing to monitor pollution levels, map potentially harmful gas distributions, identify sources of gas, etc. Mobile Robot Olfaction has made tremendous progress in the last decade and we are pleased that Prof. Michael Schmuker, one of the eminent researchers in the field, will give a presentation in which he will talk about accelerating odor sensing with inexpensive off-the-shelf sensors to enable event-driven algorithms for locating gas sources.
